A child's mental development is shaped by education which starts at home and develops through the school system. This organization has a healthy Tutorial Program in partnership with Oak Grove Baptist Church 2635 E. Washington Street, Suffolk, Virginia 23434. It is a community outreach service open to the surrounding communities. Services are offered weekly at the church every Thursday (5:30 pm to 7:30 pm) with a healthy snack for each child. Participation ranges from 3rd Graders to College Level students. We have specialized tutors for all courses and participants are required to bring homework assignments and subject books for assistance from the tutors. For further information, contact the church office during the hours of 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday -- Thursday and 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Fridays at 757.539.8012.
One-on-One Mentors are recruited to provide individual counseling to children and/or young adults who are struggling with life's challenges. "Mentoring is a relationship in which a person with greater experience and wisdom guides another person to develop both personally and professionally". This program is designed to increase self-awareness; self-discipline; and self-esteem. Through the Pathways from Bondage Coalition, the mentoring program focuses on character building, developing relationships, and establishing positive attitudes. Contact the SCM VISION, INC office for scheduling an appointment with a mentor at 757.539.8010.

The Pathways from Bondage Coalition Summer Youth Enrichment Camp is designed to meet the physical, academic, and spiritual needs of participants in an enriching, fun-filled, safe environment. This program is for children in Kindergarten to 5th grade. A variety of activities is offered and SCM VISION, INC staff of volunteers monitors all activities. Partnership between the local elementary schools aids to ensure a continuation of curriculum for the children.
The inaugural camp was two weeks long and held Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm at a SCM Vision partner location, Oak Grove Baptist Church. Bible lessons, academic lessons and games such as “hot potato” all took place at the Summer Youth Enrichment Camp. Field trips to a movie theater and the zoo were planned for the 30-plus children who participated.
The 2014 camp was under the directorship of April Felder who is wholeheartedly committed to serving our youth. One aim of SCM Vision is “to bring churches together with the community to be able to help” with various projects. During the camp, the children held devotions in the morning and were led in memorizing Psalm 23 as well as learning about famous black civil rights leaders, inventors/scientists and important lessons about social interaction and character.
The Youth Summer Enrichment Camp is slated to increase in length to run four weeks in August 2015 Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Contact the SCM VISION, Inc office for more information at 757.539.8010.
